The Mortar & Pestle Society exists to support the
Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum
in historic Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia.
In 1933, the doors between the iconic curved windows closed for good on one of Alexandria's oldest continually operating businesses. For over 114 years the Stabler-Leadbeater family operated an apothecary retailing, wholesaleing, and manufacturing company that grew to include eleven local buildings at its peak.
Today's Mortar & Pestle Society grew from a group of concerned citizens who wanted to preserve the remaining Stabler-Leadbeater buildings and their contents as a glimpse of 18th and 19th century life in Alexandria.
Society & Apothecary History
In 2006 after a major renovation the Apothecary Museum was added to the historic properties owned and operated by the City of Alexandria. The Mortar & Pestle Society, a 501(c)(3)charitable organization, supports the Museum with income from the Society's endowment, which funds conservation, education programs, and other specific needs. The Mortar & Pestle Society grew out of the long devotion to the preservation of the Apothecary by the Landmark Society. This Society History
is a monument to decades of civic action and dedicated enthusiasts.
